Deities of Mount Olympus

The highest mount in Greece, Mt. Olympus, was the home of the olympians in Ancient Greece. The king of all Gods was Zeus, he married his sister Hera. His brothers were Hades and Posieden, and he had thunder bolts and lightning as weapons. The eagle was his bird, he controlled rain, law, order, thunder and fate.

Hera, known as the Queen of heaven, was the goddess of marriage, kings, empire. She married her brother Zeus. Her bird was the peacock, and her symbols were the lotus staff and pomegranate.

The God of the sea, floods, droughts, and horses, was one of the two brothers of Zeus, Posieden. His weapon was the trident, and he rides horses and dolphins. He made king Minos’ wife fall in love with a bull and make love to it. Therefore; The Minotaur was born.

Hades, the king of the underworld, was the God of death. He was Zeus‘ other brother, and was in love with Persephone. His beast was the three headed hound, Cerberus.

The God of war, civil order, and violence, was the Ares. He had a child with Aphrodite called Eros. His weapon was the bronze-tipped spear and his garb was golden armor. His beast was the venomous snake and vulture.

Apollo, the joyful god of music, poetry, archery and healing, was Zeus‘ son by lover Leto. His weapon is the bow and arrow, and his musical instrument is the lyre.

Aphrodite, Goddess of love and beauty. She is the mother of Eros, and her symbols are the scallop shell, the apple, the dove, and myrtle wreath.

Eros, the god of love and luistful desires, is the son of Aphrodite and Ares. His weapon is the bow and arrow, and he wears nothing but wings.

Athena, virgin goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicrafts, is the daughter of Zeus. She sprang from Zeus‘ skull in full armor and growth. Zeus had to get a saw from Hephaestes, the god of metal, to cut his head open to let Athena out. Her weapons are the spear and shield, and her symbols are the olive tree and owl.

Hermes, is a messenger, and God of  travel and trade. He is the son of Zeus and Maia. His duty is to lead dead souls to the realm of Hades. His garb is a pair winged sandals and a travelers cup.

Dionysus, is the God of celebration, drunkenness, and pleasure. His symbol is a fully filled glass of wine.
